This is the first time since the Nelson County Pantry was organized in 1997 that distributions needed to be rescheduled. Our Christmas distribution was set to begin on the morning of December 19th and had to be postponed until the 26th due to an approximate 20 inch snowfall that began on the afternoon of Friday, December 18th and continued through Saturday, December 19th.
In January, the distribution was postponed from the 30th to February 6th due to another heavy snowfall. The snow was predicted to begin again on the afternoon of the 5th so one of our special volunteers coordinated an effort to call all the registered households to let our clients know we would be open on Friday morning, February 5th rather than the 6th hoping to beat the snow. But it began early. Only about 40 households were able to come and the Pantry had to close about 11:30 AM.
Once again, an effort was made to help those clients who were unable to visit the Pantry during January. On Friday, February 12th, about twenty five dedicated volunteers arrived at the Pantry facility to assist another 40 families who were previously unable to come. The skies were partly cloudy and the temperature was in the mid 30’s. The weather cooperated.
Our next Distribution is scheduled for Saturday, February 27th between the hours of 9:30 AM until noon. This is expected to be a very busy day as many of our clients have not been able to come since November 21st. Let’s hope we can carry out our mission.
A special thank you to all of our faithful volunteers who have come time after rescheduled time to make sure our Nelson County neighbors in need are able to have food on their tables.
